Classic Stoner Comedies

What’s better than getting high and watching a funny movie? Not much – as long as you have some munchies around. But not every movie will do. Some are too complicated, and others will just ruin your buzz. If you don’t want to take the risk on something new, try one of these proven classics.

The Big Lebowski

Score on Rotten Tomatoes: 81%

The Dude is a role model to us all. This 1998 classic directed by the Coen brothers follows his epic quest to get compensated for a mistakenly ruined rug, and he managed to teach us that we have the right to choose our own names. And that bowling buddies are always there for you.

This hit from 1993 will bring you back to the days of high school. Watching kids try to party it up on the last day before summer break will remind you just how tough it was to score some weed. And even though it’s set in 1973, you don’t have to worry about it not being entertaining anymore. As you keep getting older, it just stays the same age.

Cheech and Chong’s Up in Smoke

Score on Rotten Tomatoes: 38%

Cheech and Chong are two of the most famous stoners the world has ever known, so their first movie is basically required watching for anyone wanting to smoke some bud. It follows their sneaky journey of smuggling a van made of marijuana, and it will keep you laughing the whole time.

Whenever you think you’ve have some crazy stories with drug experimentation, you can be sure that Hunter S. Thompson outdid you. If you don’t believe us, then watching Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro portray Thompson and his lawyer on a trippy trip to Vegas will prove the point.

Being the first in a series is always a good sign that a movie is worth watching. This is an intense caper of trying to figure out how to get the money owed to a dealer by a strict deadline. Sounds easy, but it gets a little harder when you’re constantly high.

If you get sent to jail (for a munchie-related incident), can you count on your friends to get you out? That was the hope for one character in this movie, but the amount of smoking brought some challenges to the complicated plan. Oh, and there are plenty of famous cameos, so try to stay focused.

Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle

Score on Rotten Tomatoes: 74%

This might feel like a long and complicated ad for those square little burgers of deliciousness served up by the fine folks at White Castle, and you’re definitely going to need some by the end. If you forget to buy some in advance, you better hope that you have an easier time getting some than the main characters of this movie.

If you ever had doubts about that belief that smoking pot makes you dumb, this is the movie for you. Method Man and Redman play characters who inhale a little magic to pass the test that gets them into college.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

Score on Rotten Tomatoes: 53%

Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith portray Jay and Silent Bob quite a few times, but this movie might just be the best. They realize a movie is being made about them – but not starring them – so they set out to set things right. And, you know, smoke a little, too.

Knocked Up

Score on Rotten Tomatoes: 90%

If you can’t decide whether you want a chick flick or a stoner comedy, this is probably the movie for you. And the characters make some questionable choices which lead to an unexpected (but hilarious) pregnancy, so it serves as a reminder to always play it safe.

Pineapple Express

Score on Rotten Tomatoes: 68%

Here’s another starring Seth Rogen and company, but this one has fewer pregnancies and more hitmen. The main characters get chased around by murderous drug dealers, but that doesn’t mean you won’t spend most of the movie laughing.

Being a cop doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun. This funny film follows the Vermont State Troopers as they try to outdo the local police and order fast food that doesn’t have spit in it.

And Then?

As the scores from Rotten Tomatoes prove, choosing the best classic stoner comedies is an art – not a science. Do you disagree with any of these, or did we miss anything? Let us know next time you stop by our store to stock up!
